Break and Enter in Progress

At 2:30 p.m., the New Westminster Police received a 911 call from a resident reporting two suspicious males at a house. Within seconds, the males had kicked in the door. A 24 year old male who was keeping watch fled on foot upon police arrival at the scene and was subsequently arrested. Meanwhile the other police officers remained at the residence and watched as a 22 year old male came out the back door. He too fled once seeing the police, running through the yards and over fences. A foot pursuit resulted in the arrest of this suspect. Both males were held for court and charged with Break and Enter. One of the accused has no prior criminal record, and the other has one prior Break and Enter charge out of Burnaby. One is a Burnaby resident and the other is from Mission.

Utter Threats

Staff at New Westminster Secondary contacted NWPS to advise of threats via Facebook to one of its teachers. The suspects, a male and female student at the school, were identified through the course of the police investigation and arrested. In addition to the arrests,  the students received a school suspension.

Search Warrant – Firearms/Drug Offences

The Municipal Integrated Emergency Response Team (M.I.E.R.T.) was called out to execute 2 seach warrants relating to firearms which were believed to be located in 2 apartments in the 100 block of Royal Avenue. A Search Warrant was obtained by members of the New Westminster Police Service, which was followed by the Major Crime Unit and MIERT attending in response. Two males were arrested within the suites and firearms and marijuana were located in one of the suites. One male was charged with weapons offences and Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking.

Fatal Cyclist MVA

At approximately 08:20 a.m. the NWPS responded to a tragic event after having received a call regarding a pedestrian struck mva in the vicinity of McBride Blvd and East 6th Avenue. It was determined that an 11 year old boy had been struck by a truck while he was riding his bicycle. The Ambulance Service attended on scene and took the boy to hospital, while Sgt Dudar and the Forensic Identification Section were contacted to conduct a detailed accident investigation. The childs condition deteriorated while in hospital, and he eventually succumbed to the injuries and passed away. The investigation is still ongoing with Sgt Dudar handling traffic analyst duties with Cst’s Hagen and Perry handling the overall investigation.

Operational Support Unit

The Operational Support Unit (OSU) members continued to perform high-visibility mobile patrols, street checks, and nuisance by-law enforcement throughout the city, with particular attention to the parks and downtown/uptown areas of New Westminster. OSU members issued numerous violation tickets for Motor Vehicle Act and Liquor offences throughout the city.
The Queens Park Project, lead by Cst. JONES and SCHULTZ, continued through the month. The project appears to be very effective due to the lack of reported and observed liquor and nuisance related activity in the park.
OSU members made frequent patrols around the Queens Park Arena during the Salmonbellies intermediate A games on Friday evenings and Senior games on Thursday evenings. Of note, the games have been well controlled and there has been minimal enforcement of liquor offences.
